They're it's almost easier because there's so much to learn. You put something out. You learn something so fast. Or, like, or when you're going to the gym, when you're strength training, when the 1st year is the best. It's like you get stronger every single time you go to the gym. You're learning. It's amazing. But as you go year after year after year, you get more and more advanced, the learning comes in small teeny increments. Like, you learn a little gem here, a little jump here, you put on a little bit of strength to this lift every, like, couple of months. It's not ever stronger every single time. It's like it's it gets harder, the better you get at it. And when you have a teeny tiny bit of fat to lose, that means if if it's really worth it to you and whom I had to say whether it is or isn't, but if it's worth you, you have to inherently be more strict. You have to dial in your nutrition. You have to dial in your workouts. And I think one of the most overlooked aspects of this specific individual is is strength training to build muscle is making sure they're gonna strength train enough to build more muscles so they can increase their metabolism, and also having preset higher calorie days. I think this is super important. Not always eating at a higher calorie, and a calorie surplus, but One of the issues that will happen here is when you're trying to be super strict in the calorie deficit all the time, it's it's very difficult to be consistent with that. It's very difficult to 7 days a week nonstop being a in a calorie deficit. So I like to do what's called calorie cycling where a couple days a week, you will deliberately eat higher calorie closer towards maintenance so that you can it will obvi it will help your blism will help increase a little bit, will help with your leptin sensitivity, insulin sensitivity, but also what it's gonna do is it's gonna make it more realistic for you. You have a couple days where you know you can eat more calories. It will make it more sustainable long term. It's when you have those last five, seven, ten pounds to go, you need to find ways to make it more sustainable because it's going to be more difficult. Right. So then how give me an example. How many more calories, which are you saying a day? Like, would you say, like, 2 days calorie, like, 2 days super, super strict,

Episode 337: Jeff Karp: Breaking Patterns, Achieving Enhanced Mental Performance, & Creativity In a Distracted World
Tue Apr 16 2024
Distracted kid, and what I started to realize is anytime I asked a question, my attention would hyperfocus for a few moments. On what the response would be. And then I could feel that, like, imprinting in my mind, and I would be able to recall it later. And so I discovered that asking questions was a tool for me to cope to learn that, like, as I'm sitting in class, I just can't even if I go to lectures today, it's it's hard for me to pay attention for too long. My mind's just wandering across, you know, they'll say one thing and I'll connect it to something else I know. And now I'm thinking about that and then I come back, and it's really easy to get into this sort of cycle of shaming myself as well. But I feel so I've been been developing all the tools and strategies throughout my life to be able to compensate for all of the things that I feel are holding me back And that I and I think now as I look back, I think what I was doing at the time, it was the first time in my life where I was really consciously tapping into my own neuroplasticity, my sort of conscious rewiring of my brain. I love that. So you have to teach yourself how to be like what I say, like, resourceful and figure things out. Like, I always say that sometimes, like, mediocrity is a strength because when you aren't good at things. You, it forces you to learn and navigate better than if it were great at everything, right? So you, you kind of figured out early on how to overcompensate for these, like, things that you felt that you were less great at, right? Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, even, like, the challenges, the struggles, the failures. Like, there were so many, like, spectacular failures along the way. I mean, I could almost every year, I can give you 1 or more. But because I had this awareness, I realized that every time I encountered a challenge or failure. Just, you know, as an example, there'd be this sort of heightened emotion that I'd feel very frustrated, very angry. I'd notice it would dissipate within 2 or 3 days after I a good night's sleep or 2, and then there would be almost like this

Episode 335: Sara Jane Ho: Netflix’s “Mind Your Manners”, Modern Etiquette & The Power of a First Impression

He uses chopsticks. Right? So and and and even western dining is a really new concept. Really? It really just came about. I mean, in the nineties, it was very basically, no Western restaurants in China. And then in 2000, a couple of started springing up. Now every Michelin chef is going to China. Yes. I agree with you, and I know that to be true. What I actually love about how you present or how you even in your book, it's kinda like, to me, like, a coffee table book where you don't have to read it all at once. Like, it's very it's an easy read, and there's so many great Like, you there's a dating section. There's a table manners. There's there's different sections. So, like, you can just pull and just read a little bit and then put it down and go back. It it's not it's not sequential like that. Right? Exactly. And it's it's a combination of anecdotes, a lot of anecdotes. Right? So each section is maybe 1 to 2 pages. Exactly. And it's like, like I said, an easier read. So I wanna ask you a few questions. Okay? So or go through a couple of things that I thought were very interesting. Let's just talk about you said in the book, it takes 8 positive encounters to change someone's negative impression of you. So can you just talk about that and how did you how did who figured that out? How do you know this to be true? Please just expand on that. Well, we need to dial it back to first impressions. And first impressions, some research says 2 minutes. Some research says not even a second. Right? So somebody's forming a first impression of you within, like, within a second, of seeing you. So that's before you even speak, before you say anything. And, usually, I mean, we wanna make good first impressions. That's why it's so important. And whenever we make a negative let's say if we have if somebody forms a negative impression of us, then it takes it's varying. So some people have said it takes a number of hours, but generally speaking, they everybody points to some Harvard research study that, you know, that doesn't really exist, that I haven't been able to find. And but generally speaking, they say it's it takes 8 positive
